Review of The Enchanted One by Lora Deeprose

Enchanted One Banner

The Enchanted One cover

“She wanted to live a normal life. He wanted to end it.”

Orphaned at birth and raised in a cloistered convent, Lizzie Chambers knows nothing of her parentage; even her name comes from the pages of a book. When she is forced to leave the convent, she soon finds out life is nothing like her cherished Austen novels. Trapped in an unhappy marriage and questioning her own sanity, her only solace is her beloved flower shop, Enchanted Garden.

When her husband is killed and her store burns down, both under suspicious circumstances, Lizzie finds herself fleeing a demon she has no clue how to stop or even why it has targeted her in the first place.

But Gideon York knows. As a member of the Order of the Triple Goddess he is charged with protecting Lizzie and others like her from the dark forces seeking to destroy these rare and powerful women.

When their growing attraction tempts Gideon to break his sacred vow and Lizzie’s own powers threaten her new found family in the Order, she can no longer deny her destiny. To protect the people she loves, Lizzie must find the courage to face the demon alone and risk the ultimate sacrifice . . . her life.

Review:
Important to note that this is the first book in a trilogy.  Rammed with adventure, this author truly knows how to let action propel a story.  Starting with rage allows the author to showcase that Lizzie is not a perfect person, just as many of us are not perfect.  Lizzie’s temper notwithstanding, she ends up in a lot of hot water, and has to fight to keep what she finds solace in safe.  Will she be able to save those she loves?

Lora Deeprose – Bio

Lora was born in the small town of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta; the middle child of five girls. In 2006, she and her eldest sister moved to a hobby farm in the remote Kootenay area of British Columbia and for five years had several country adventures which included raising chickens and goats, encounters with wildlife and wrangling the neighbour’s horses. Author Alaina Stanford

I have one of those
brains that won’t turn off at night. Many nights I would distract my intellect
by revamping a movie, book or TV show in my mind. I would twist and turn the
plots and characters to achieve the ending I preferred. That developed into
side stories about my favorite minor characters. Each night I fell asleep in
the middle of a grand adventure. It wasn’t long before I began to create
stories of my own and put pen to paper.

I love a good adventure. I love a good romance. As the
mother of seven children, I also learned to love to play video games. One day
it occurred to me to write an adventure that flowed like a video game and I
added a touch of romance. Thus, Hypnotic Journey was born. The HJ characters
are like a family to me. They are foolish, daring, resourceful, passionate and
dedicated to their friends.
My love for Science Fiction gave birth to the Treborel
Series. It’s a paranormal Sci-Fi romance featuring a psychotic villain and a
multiple layer
of hero’s fighting to survive the chaos.
I write about how friendship and love can carry you through
situations that you might not otherwise survive. You will find my stories
exciting and steamy, but I am not an erotic writer. My stories fade to dark
when the steam begins to rise, but take it from me, the steam does rise and
emotions do soar.

Review of Chasing Liberty by Theresa Linden

Chasing Liberty Banner

Review: Do you like Dystopian literature?  Do you enjoy books like The Giver and The Hunger Games?  Imagine a world that combines those ideals, and step forward into the world of Liberty.  Liberty isn’t content with what she is told she must do in life, because she wants so much more for her future.  She believes she should have a choice in what happens to her.  Although there are hints of the lifestyles seen in The Giver and The Hunger Games, Liberty’s world is one all of her own.  Will she be able to overcome the obstacles to get what she wants, or will she have to bow down to the whims of the government in order to keep the people she loves safe?

Chasing Liberty cover2

Here’s the back cover blurb:
Liberty 554-062466-84 of Aldonia lives in a responsible society that cares for the earth and everyone on it. They have learned to balance resource consumption with replacement initiatives, unavoidable pollution with clean-environment efforts. Science ensures that every baby born is healthy. The government ensures that every baby born is needed. All are cared for, taught, and given a specific duty to perform, their unique contribution to society. Why is Liberty so unsatisfied?

In less than two weeks, Liberty must begin her vocation. Every girl in Aldonia wishes she had Liberty’s vocation. Liberty would rather flee from Aldonia and live on her own, independent of the all-controlling government, the Regimen Custodia Terra. The high electrical Boundary Fence crushes any thought of escape. The ID implant imbedded in her hand makes it impossible to hide. She has no choice but to submit. Liberty is slated to be a Breeder.

As vocation day draws near, a man with an obsession for Liberty attacks her and injects her with a drug. She’s about to lose consciousness when someone comes to her rescue, a man in a mottled cape and dark glasses. She wakes in an underground facility where people watch over Aldonia with an array of monitors and surveillance equipment. These people are full of secrets, but she discovers one thing: they rescue a man scheduled for re-education. They rescued him. They can rescue her.

Theresa Linden

Theresa resides with her husband and three boys in northeast Ohio. She was born in California and moved every three years (her father was in the Coast Guard). This probably accounts for her love of traveling and desire to see the world. Living by the ocean, under the palm trees in Guam and Hawaii, helped spur her imagination. She began writing illustrated short stories with her sister in grade school, borrowing characters from favorite movies and shows. Now, writing is her passion. Her favorite genres include Fantasy, Western, Contemporary, Supernatural and Futuristic. Other interests: painting with acrylic, drawing with ink, hiking, traveling and American History. Theresa is a member of the Catholic Writer’s Guild, a local writers’ group, and Critique Circle, an online critique group. She has an Associate’s Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Drafting and a Catechetical Degree from Catholic Distance University.

Review of Queen’s Destiny (Blood Prophecy 1) by Barb Jones

Genre: Adult Fantasy

Blood Prophecy

Synopsis:
Amber Stone, once a child prodigy, has just become curator of a special collection of Macedonian artifacts for the Seattle Museum of Natural History. Chloe, a prodigy of a different sort, holds a position at the museum focusing on tribal art. The two become fast friends, united by Amber's unsettling dreams and Chloe’s unorthodox ways of dealing with them. Two strangers arrive in town, bringing with them a prophecy recorded more than three-thousand years ago, a prophecy that places Amber directly in the midst of a battle that has spanned a millennia.

Review:
Suddenly the reader is swept into a land of ancient secrets while trying to keep calm and acknowledge the present day.  Supernatural and modern inventions work together to create a believable plot, and riveting story line.  Through the novel you get the intimate viewings of three lives: Michael (Machiel), Amber, and Chloe.  Travel with them to learn what happens when everything you thought you knew is turned upside down.  Through seamless and continual change in perspective, Jones manages to keep the audience wondering what could happen next.  This book is slightly graphic, and I would personally give it a PG 13 rating, at the very least.

Barb Jone’s Bio:

Having been born and raised in Hawaii, I loved telling stories ever since I was a child about vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, and witches.  I was a little girl who loved scary stories, much to my mother’s dismay.  The scarier – the better.  Hawaii was a perfect place for stories until I moved to Seattle.  I decided to turn a love for the supernatural into writing stories to see if others would love them as much as I do.  Currently, I live in Florida but since I’m a Seattle girl at heart, my stories take place in the Northwest.  I continue to write supernatural stories of vampires, werewolves, witches, and more while enjoying the beaches and sunshine.  I also love to help others and give back to my community.

Address Change for Upcoming Reviews!

While the reviews aren’t going to stop, they are going to start up on a new blog page, specifically for book reviews.  As an avid reader, I’ve kept lists of what books I’ve been reading for a few years now.  The plan is to write a review for each book I read, both for me to keep track and to help others find awesome books!

Here is my new book review blog, Owlie Reviews.

Of course, as an aspiring author, I also have a great new Facebook page.  While I’m not sharing too much of my work just yet, I will say that I mostly write YA, and that my most current project features a bit of the supernatural.  If you feel up to it, feel free to like me on Facebook as Lizzy March.

Review of Cindy A. Christiansen’s Fortune For Fools

Fortune for Fools Banner

German shorthaired pointer posing in the field

Synopsis:
Risk-taker Zeke Abberley knows how to be bold when it comes to his antique shop on Merchant Street in Salt Lake City, Utah. He successfully bid on a collection of 1800s antiques in Nauvoo, Illinois that may contain a valuable Hayez painting. However, love is another matter. Afraid that all women are users, he’s always injuring his dates, particularly Lavinia Vega, who works at her father’s art gallery.

Studious Lavinia Vega is tired of proving to Zeke that she has no ulterior motives. When Zeke brings her a damaged painting to restore and authenticate, she is eager to help but not get involved. When she uncovers a hidden map behind the painting that leads to valuable buried coins, the game plan changes. Or so Zeke thinks.

Review:
If you like down to earth, honest characters, with a bit of paranoia then this book is for you!  Not only do both Zeke and Lavinia have secrets, but they both have secrets that they believe would make the town look at their families in a whole new light.  While Zeke is drawn to the family business as the owner and proprietor of an antique shop, Lavinia is  stuck working under her overbearing father in an art gallery.  Will the two come to trust each other enough to learn what is really important in life, or will they be unwilling to compromise and help each other?

This book features some of my favourite things!  Mystery, suspense, secrets, and a very lovable (but still in need of training) dog!  The characters are well developed and the story is both plausible and endearing.  As Zeke and Lavinia fight to try to find what will make them happy in life, you feel as if you are right there for the ride.  Not only are the two main characters relatable and entertaining, but the supporting cast also plays prominent roles to the overall story.  This book features great foreshadowing, so pay attention to the first half!

Review of Heart of the Sea by Jasmine Denton

Heart of the Sea Banner

Heart of the Sea cover

Synopis

A devastating curse, an ancient witch, and a dangerous love…

How far would you go to save the life of the person you love? In another lifetime, Mykaela made a deal with the devil—a powerful sea-witch Narissa who used her to steal the souls of drowning victims. Mykaela can keep her lover Dylan alive by helping Narissa gain ultimate power using those souls.

Mykaela’s been reincarnated to pay her debt to the witch. To ensure her obedience, Narissa turns the teen’s life into a hellish battlefield by hurting her friends and putting her mother into a magical coma. The supernatural has been on her side up until now, but when someone close to her takes a trip down the dark side, old wounds are opened. Can they break the curse before she loses everyone she holds dear in this lifetime?

REVIEW:
Denton uses Greek Mythology’s Poseidon to gear up a tale of love and loss about a sea witch, a dolphin god, and two star crossed lovers that would do anything to find each other.  With hints of Romeo and Juliet origins, Heart of the Sea amply show what can happen to people who recognize past mistakes and try to fix the damage they may have caused.

A Review of Loving Lucianna by Joyce DiPastena

Loving Lucianna Banner (1)

Everyone has known a person that can’t seem to help themselves and is always out spending, despite never having the means to support their expensive habits and hobbies. Imagine if that person happened to be your brother, a brother you had known nothing about for the first fifteen years of your life. As an orphan, you’d concocted a great story about your parents but your brother makes all of that disappear. His price for keeping your secret? The price is always at an incline, for if he could simply blackmail you, what more could he need?

Lucianna couldn’t help but imagine what her life could have been like if she knew her parents. Especially because she knew that life in the convent wasn’t the most exciting thing. When circumstances change and she finds love, she realizes that despite having the life she wants dangling right in front of her, she simply cannot risk her brother’s interference with the people she loves. A hard choice, but one she perceives to be made out of necessity, Lucianna decides she cannot marry her heart’s desire, Sir Balduin. Sir Balduin, in the dark, cannot fathom why his angel would suddenly pull so strongly from him. Could Sir Balduin be the one who shows Lucianna that with love anything is possible?

LovingLuciannacover

Joyce DiPastena dreamed of green medieval forests while growing up in the dusty copper mining town of Kearny, Arizona. She filled her medieval hunger by reading the books of Thomas B. Costain (where she fell in love with King Henry II of England), and later by attending the University of Arizona where she graduated with a degree in history, specializing in the Middle Ages. The university was also where she completed her first full-length novel…set, of course, in medieval England. Later, her fascination with Henry II led her to expand her research horizons to the far reaches of his “Angevin Empire” in France, which became the setting of her first published novel, Loyalty’s Web (a 2007 Whitney Award Finalist).

When she’s not writing, Joyce loves to read, play the piano, and spend time with her sister and friends. A highlight of her year is attending the annual Arizona Renaissance Festival. She lives with her two cats, Clio and Glinka Rimsky-Korsokov, in Mesa, Arizona.Joyce Dipastena
